Of course I'll recommend the Vorkosigan series by Lois McMaster Bujold (either starting at <i>Shards of Honor</i>/<i>Cordelia's Honor</i> (omnibus edition), or <i>Brothers in Arms</i>) and <i>The Snow Queen</i> by Joan Vinge.
